Indy mother says she won't pay funeral home until she gets her son's ashes

INDIANAPOLIS -- A grieving mother is in a financial battle with an Indy funeral home who she says wants her to pay for her son’s funeral bill, but won’t give her his ashes.

In 2016, Andrea Brown’s 17-year-old son, DeAndre Williams died after his body rejected a heart transplant.

Brown says she decided to have her son cremated, but Stuart Mortuary never gave her his ashes.

“I actually didn’t tell anybody, not my kids or his dad… because I couldn’t talk about it and it was hurtful to go back to them to find out where my son was at,” said Brown.

Two years later, Stuart Mortuary sent her a letter threatening to send her to collections if she didn’t pay them the $2,530 she still owes.

Brown says she’ll pay the bill after she receives her son’s ashes.

“I want my son’s ashes, I would pay for closure,” said Brown.

In an email, the owner of Stuart Mortuary tells Call 6 Investigates that she is waiting for legal advice before responding to the story.

She also says she “regrets that it has come to this.”
