ISP deploys new license plate-reading cameras on patrol cars

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana State Troopers can now figure out who you are before they even turn on their lights and sirens to pull you over.

Police say the new technology is helping them "pick needles out of haystacks."

Some of ISP's patrol cars are now equipped with high-powered cameras that capture every license plate driving by. The computer system inside the car then reads the license plates and compares them against a nationwide database.

Just a few weeks ago, Trooper Corey Berfield was passing by a stolen pickup truck when the alarm went off. Berfield says if he didn't have the system, that person could very well still be on the streets.

The new system isn't popular with everyone, though. The ACLU recently sent out a packet entitled "You Are Being Tracked," saying the devices are also keeping tabs on innocent drivers.
