The Department of Education says students need to watch out and remember that claiming borrower's defense is free.
DOE officials say scammers are already targeting students with calls, and even using logos similar to the DOE's in their emails.
But the DOE says you shouldn't be fooled. For one thing, if you have to pay to get help on this issue, it's for sure a scam. That's because the DOE officers help for free.
Officials said scammer companies typically have the words "federal" or "national" or something else "official-sounding" in their title.
Also look out for any organization promising to provide immediate relief, forgive student loans outright or get you out of a default – they're also probably scams.
Another warning sign: If the organization is advertising on Facebook or the top of Google search results.
