New Amazon Locker gives you safe place for mail

If you’re worried about so-called “porch pirates”, or thieves stealing your packages, Amazon has a new alternative.

The company has introduced Amazon Locker, which allows you to pick up your package at a secure locker rather than your front doorstep.

RTV6 found at least eight locations in Central Indiana, including downtown, Glendale Mall, Castleton, and Clay Terrace.

"Amazon Lockers are a safe and secure way for our customers to receive their Amazon packages and can do so at any time up to 3 business days after their order has been delivered to a Locker," said company spokesperson Jim Billimoria.

However, Indianapolis Metro Police say you should treat a package locker like you would an ATM.

“Be aware of someone coming up beside you or someone else in the lot, just be aware that they're there,” said IMPD Officer James Gillespie. “Be ready to call 911 if you need to. The other thing you can do is having somebody with you."

Gillespie said you should also try to go during the day if possible.

“It’s always better if you can get to a well-lit area because that’s going to deter criminals,” said Gillespie.

IMPD is not aware of any robberies or crimes associated with Amazon Lockers, however, they are on the police department’s radar.

Some of the Amazon Lockers are located indoors, such as a lobby, while others are outside.

Once your package is delivered to the locker, you will receive a code that you must enter into the locker to retrieve your package.
