State regulators to decide whether to allow transfer for Medtech nursing students in limbo

INDIANAPOLIS -- Medtech students are waiting to see if the Indiana State Board of Nursing will let Harrison College offer an licensed practical nurse program.

Harrison College already offers a registered nurse program and an Associates in Science, but needs state approval to offer the LPN courses to Medtech students.

In August, Medtech announced it would be closing its doors because the U.S. Department of Education had banned the school from receiving federal student loans, similar to what happened with ITT Tech.

The for-profit college was founded in Indianapolis in 2004, and has two locations in the city and a third in Fort Wayne, in addition to campuses elsewhere around the country.

Statewide, about 200 Medtech nursing students can finish their education at Harrison College if state regulators allow, otherwise those students may have to restart their education and seek forgiveness of their loans.

The Indiana State Board of Nursing is meeting Thursday in Indianapolis to make the decision.
