Tips for staying safe on walking, biking trails

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS – Hitting the trails is part of summer fun for many families, but emergency officials want to be sure everyone is safe during their time outdoors.

Officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are responsible for responding to emergencies throughout the state.

Jet Quillen with DNR said those using the trails should tell family and friends where they are going and what time they expect to be home. He also recommended bringing your cell phone to call for help if needed.

“Knowing the area is key and being able to tell that to the 911 dispatcher so they can relay that information to the first responders,” said Quillen.

For those places with bad cell phone service, DNR said investing in a GPS monitoring device can be helpful.
