INDIANAPOLIS -- Veteran Affairs Secretary David Shulkin spent several hours at the Richard L. Roudebush Medical Center in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

The visit was not open to the media and employees at the VA were told not to talk about it. Shulkin spoke with employees and toured the facility with Gov. Eric Holcomb.

The event was not on Gov. Holcomb's public calendar. We reached out to the governor's office for a comment abut have not heard back with a response.

A spokesperson for the Roudebush VA Medical Center released this statement:

"Secretary Shulkin visited the Indianapolis VAMC today, and invited Governor Holcomb to join him. They met with leadership from VA programs in central Indiana, and toured clinical, research and Veteran-centered care programs in the medical center. We were pleased to be able to host both the secretary and the governor, and were proud to show them the work we are doing to meet our commitment to Indiana Veterans."

Shulkin served as an undersecretary at the VA during the Obama administration.  All 100 senators voted in favor of his confirmation.

The 57-year-old is the first VA secretary not to have served in the military, though he comes from a family with a history of serving in the armed services.

During his tenure, Shulkin expressed concern about veteran suicides and the need to expand veterans access to healthcare.
