NEW CASTLE -- 59 New Castle factory workers will be looking for new jobs.

North Carolina-based Hickory Springs Manufacturing (HSM) is permanently laying off the employees on October 1. Company Vice President Darrell Bryant explained the reasons for the job cuts in a letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development:

The reason for the decision is unforeseen business circumstances associated with COVID-19 and its impact on HSM's financial performance and productivity at its New Castle, Indiana facility.

Additionally, Bryant said the company plans to move some equipment and production from New Castle to other locations around the country.

The New Castle plant will remain open, but with fewer workers. “We are incredibly appreciative of the New Castle team and are committed to helping all impacted employees during this transition by securing employment at other HSM facilities or providing resources to help them locate employment elsewhere as soon as possible," said Bryant.

Hickory Springs is a furniture and bedding company with plants in 14 states. It is also involved in transportation, packaging, healthcare, apparel and other industries.
