INDIANAPOLIS — The biggest annual July 4 fireworks show in Indianapolis will not light up the sky in 2020.
Emmis Communications announced Wednesday morning that the IPL Downtown Freedom Fest and fireworks display has been canceled due to concerns about keeping people safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Event organizers said in a post on the Downtown Freedom Fest's Facebook page that the two factors in their decision to cancel were "social distancing and public health concerns, and the deployment of financial resources in the current economic environment."
Organizers explored other options, but the post said they believe canceling the event is the best decision.
They expect to resume to the 50-year-old July 4 tradition in 2021.
