INDIANAPOLIS – A 5-year-old girl has died from a gunshot wound she suffered last Saturday at an apartment on Indianapolis' northeast side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Police were dispatched the 4000 block of Newburgh Drive just after 2 p.m. on December 31 for a report of a person shot.

They found the girl and took her to Riley Children's Hospital, where she had been in critical condition until Wednesday when she died.

Homicide detectives say they believe the girl's 3-year-old brother accidentally shot her.

The children's mother was at the apartment at the time of the shooting.  Police say no charges have been filed at this time.  However, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the case.
