HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. – At least a dozen cars and mini barns were broken into near New Palestine last week, and police plan to step up patrols to catch the suspects.
Deputies with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said the thieves began targeting the communities in the southwest part of the county at the beginning of the year.
The latest wave of break-ins happened last Friday and Saturday. Deputies said at least 30 break-ins have been reported, and investigators believe the incidents are possibly connected.
Deputies said they believe the suspects are searching for cash or pills.
Kathy Sorrell, who lives in the neighborhood, said her car was one of the vehicles broken into.
“They will be caught, if they come back in the area they will be caught,” said Sorrell. “We're aware of it now, everybody will be watching because it is a very close neighborhood and we do take care of each other.”
To prevent the incident from happening again, Sorrell plans to install a new light outside her home to hopefully deter thieves.
