INDIANAPOLIS -- A lost child run ended with the 3-year-old's babysitter in handcuffs Wednesday afternoon on the south side.
Indianapolis police were called to the 2900 block of South State Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday by Jessica Jorgenson, 28, who said a 3-year-old boy she was babysitting had disappeared from her home.
Jorgenson told police she noticed the boy was not playing with her children like she thought, and then she noticed that the front door was open.
She notified the child's mother, who was already returning from work to pick him up and who then set out looking for him herself.
At the same time, police had already been called to a 3-year-old child found near State and Troy avenues.
It was eventually determined that 3-year-old was the same one Jorgenson was looking for.
In all, police said the boy was on his own for about an hour outside in below-freezing temperatures.
Jorgenson gave police permission to search her home, whereupon they found a glass pipe and what appeared to be marijuana on her desk, along with a bag of loose pills later identified as Tramadol.
Jorgenson reportedly told police she didn't take the pills and that "she only smokes weed and smoked last around 10 a.m." She told police she was on the computer on social media while the boy she was babysitting was playing with her two children.
The 3-year-old boy was returned to the custody of his mother, and Jorgenson's children were transported to the Department of Child Services.
Jorgenson was taken into custody on charges of neglect of a dependent, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.
