BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington man who claims he suffers from “sexsomnia” will serve one year probation for fondling a teenage girl during a March sleepover.
Andrew Passwaiter, 18, was sentenced to one year probation in Monroe Circuit Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count of sexual battery.
Passwaiter was arrested in March when a 15-year-old girl told Bloomington police she woke up to find him fondling her.
Andrew Passwaiter told police he suffers from “sexsomnia,” a condition where a person engages in sexual activities while they are asleep.

Debby Herbenick, director of The Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University, told RTV6 in March that sexsomnia is uncommon and those who suffer from it may exhibit different actions.
“The few studies that exist put it around five or six percent of the population,” said Herbenick. “Some do talk during these episodes. Some people groan or grunt as they might during sex, so there is a range of different ways that people can experience this.”
Herbenick said that because the research on sexsomnia is so limited, it’s difficult for a doctor to diagnose.
Passwaiter told investigators he was diagnosed by a psychologist who has since died.
Passwaiter’s probation period runs until June 20, 2018. As a condition of the probation, Passwaiter is to have no contact with his victim during that period.
