GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- A Putnamville Correctional Officer has been arrested she admitted to being paid to bring drugs, a cell phone and pornographic photos to an inmate.

Correctional Officer Rachel Marie Spendal was taken in for questioning after a “suspicious” package had fallen out of her purse while she was working in an offender dorm. Correctional police found numerous orange strips believed to be suboxone and pornographic photos inside the package.

After Officer Spendal agreed to a search of her vehicle, a cell phone wrapped in black electrical tape with several additional orange strips was found.

Officer Spendal admitted to police that she had been paid $1,000 to bring in the package for inmate Maverick Wells-Tennison, who is currently housed in the facility’s restricted housing unit under investigation.

Spendal is charged with conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance and cell phone.

“It is sad to see our own staff involved in trafficking, but they will be held to the same standard as any other visitor or offender and will be prosecuted to the highest degree possible to ensure the safety and security of our facility, as well as the department,” says PCF Superintendent Brian Smith.
