INDIANAPOLIS -- The father of a 5-year-old police say shot and killed another child last week turned himself in to police.
P.L. Gage, 27, was charged with neglect last week when Marion County prosecutors filed formal charges in connection with the death of 9-year-old Mykah Jackson.
Police say Mykah was playing in Gage's apartment when he was shot in the face. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died.
According to court documents obtained by Call 6 Investigates, Mykah was visiting his father, Michael Jackson, in Indianapolis for the summer.
Mykah's father told detectives that his son was playing with Gage's 5-year-old son and another boy while the two were visiting in a front room when they heard the gun go off. They ran into the bedroom and saw Mykah lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his face. He said he picked up his son and ran outside where another neighbor offered to drive them to the hospital.
Gage told detectives that the gun was sitting on his dresser under a pile of clothing when the kids found it and that he had intended to move it to the kitchen and out of reach but had forgotten.
He said his son likely knew how to use a gun because he also had a shotgun that he kept hidden in his broiler and his son had seen him with it.
Gage is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death and neglect of a dependent.
