GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A Johnson County woman is facing charges after police say she neglected her grandmother for months causing her to suffer severe bed sores and sepsis.
According to court documents police were called to Community South Hospital's emergency room by hospital staff who were treating the 85-year-old after they found she had significant bed sores, was severely dehydrated, septic and appeared to have not eaten for several days. The documents state that the victim also had critically low blood pressure and was in and out of consciousness.
The woman was living with he granddaughter, Theresa Wilson, 45, who was also her caregiver. During an interview with police Wilson said she noticed the bed sores a month ago, but later admitted to police that she had seen them at least three months earlier. She told police she had been treating the sores with antibiotic and could not take the victim to the emergency room because of her work schedule.
Court documents show that Wilson was also using her grandmother's social security payments to pay her own bills, rent and utilities.
Wilson was arrested on Thursday morning and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. The charge carries a sentencing range from three to sixteen years.
