IMPD officer shoots lunging pit bull on west side

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- An IMPD officer shot a pit bull Saturday morning after the dog lunged at the officer on the west side.

IMPD received a call about an aggressive dog preventing a 53-year-old woman from entering her house around 5:00 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of North Tibbs Avenue.

When an officer arrived on scene to investigate, the dog, described in the incident report as a pit bull, reportedly "lunged at the officer in an aggressive manner."

The officer then fired at the dog, striking but not killing it.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services officers were then called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

"We arrived on-scene after IMPD took action, and we were able to work with the dog’s owner on next steps regarding immediate care for the animal," said Madelyn Gregory, IACS public information officer. "The dog was treated for her injuries and, to the best of our knowledge, is currently alive and healing."

Gregory said IACS had no other complaints on file about the dog.

Neither the officer nor the female complainant reported injuries during the incident.
