GREENFIELD, Ind. – An Indianapolis man died while in police custody Friday night.
Greenfield Police said shortly before 6:30 p.m. officers responded to a call of an intoxicated man lying in the grass in the 800 block of South State Street.
Officers said when they arrived on scene, 48-year-old Douglas Wiggington became combative and he was shot with a Taser by police.
Wiggington began having medical problems and was given Narcan then CPR, police said.
Medical personnel transported the man to Hancock Regional Hospital where he later died, police said.
As part of normal procedure, Sgt. Rodney Vawter and Officer Dillon Silver were placed on administrative duty, said Greenfield Chief of Police Jeff Rasche.
Indiana State Police has assisted in the ongoing investigation of the death.
'Obviously the autopsy will be part of that package and it will be up to the prosecutor to decide did the officers act appropriately, was this just an unforeseen circumstance?" said ISP Sgt. Trent Smith. "Part of the results of the stun gun, or maybe it was part of the results of the person's medical history and maybe something else that was going on."
