INDIANAPOLIS -- When a thief tries to steal packages from your front porch while you’re away it helps to have family as your neighbors, and it’s even better when one of them works for the sheriff’s office.
Tim Dewitt helped nab a would-be thief who was trying to steal packages from his sister’s doorstep on the city’s south side.
Dewitt said he just happened to be looking out his window on Tuesday when he saw a stranger walking up to his sister’s house, eyeing a stack of recently delivered packages.
“Just watching him you knew he was up to no good. He just kept looking at the packages and was walking. At that point I thought, boy, he’s going to do something,” said Dewitt.
He called his nephew, who just happens to be a sheriff’s deputy and lives nearby as well. The deputy confronted the suspect who took off running.
But he didn’t get very far. The deputy was able to tackle him just feet away and took him into custody. David Lee Shannon is facing theft charges.
Dewitt said he’s just fortunate he was looking outside at the right time.
The packages were all recovered at the scene.
