INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis police and community members are looking for ways to bring peace to an east side neighborhood after several deadly shootings have occurred during the first half of the year.
Four fatal shootings have happened near the intersection of 10th and Rural streets since January, according to police, and some neighbors are concerned for their safety.
One man who lives in the area said he always carries a gun to protect himself.
“Once people have in their mind they want to rob somebody and kill somebody, as you can see a lot of these people are not even scared of the police. When someone doesn't care about the police and they'll shoot at police and fight police, they'll do it to anyone else,” said the man who asked to remain anonymous.
Rev. Malachi Walker said the community needs to take action.
“If we just continue sitting back and allowing it to happen, it's going to get worse,” he said.
Walker said he will host a neighborhood cleanup in the coming weeks to help bring the community together.
Reese Hamilton, 8, has also planned a kid’s peace march for Saturday at the intersection beginning at 10 a.m.
Over the past two years, the city has invested $1.48 million into the 10th and Rural area through the distribution of federal funds by the city, according to Taylor Schaffer, communications director for the Office of Mayor Joe Hosett.
"In addition, the city, in partnership with Renew Indy – the city’s land bank -- is currently working on the sale of 15 homes and lots to improve the area right around 10th/Rural. Lastly, we are in the process of authorizing Near Eastside HoTIF funds for streetscape improvements on 10th Street, including the Rural intersection," Schaffer said.
