WINCHESTER, Ind. -- Despite rumors to the contrary, there is no man roaming around Randolph County injecting random passersby with heroin, the sheriff's department says.
The agency posted to its Facebook page Tuesday afternoon about a hoax post making the rounds online.
The post purports to show the picture of a man who has been walking around Winchester, Indiana, injecting innocent, unsuspecting people with heroin.
But the story is a hoax, according to the sheriff's department.
"There is no truth to this story in Winchester, Indiana, or anywhere else that we know of," the department wrote. "The bogus story also offers a link to share this story on Facebook. To those who are sharing it, please do not."
Winchester was the target of another hoax in March, when local radio station WZZY 98.3 FM's emergency alert system was hacked. The hackers used the system to broadcast a message about a zombie attack and disease outbreak from deceased bodies.
According to the sheriff's department, there were no zombie attacks reported in Winchester at the time.
