HENDRICKS COUNTY -- A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon in an Avon neighborhood.

The shooting happened around 2:50 p.m. at a home in the 1200 block of Sheffield Drive, near the intersection of County Road 100 North and Avon Avenue.

The Hendricks County Sheriff's Department told RTV6 an adult male had been killed after being shot in the torso. The victim's identity has not been released, but they believe he called dispatchers earlier in the day, prompting response from deputies.

One shot was fired by a reserve officer, and because the officer is not a full-time officer, no administrative leave will be issued.

No officers were injured in the shooting and deputies do not believe anyone else was home at the time.

Just after 4 p.m., the Avon Police Department released the following statement about the shooting:

"Earlier this afternoon, officers from our agency responded to the area of C.R. 100 North and Avon Avenue in response to a call for service from a deputy with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office who had become involved in a police-action shooting. Officers from the Brownsburg Police Department and Indiana State Police also responded to assist.

The Hendricks County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation as all officers are safe and accounted for at this time. On behalf of our agency and the law enforcement profession, we ask that you remain patient with the investigative process and have trust and faith in the professionals that are responding to this incident. These incidents are extremely difficult on all parties involved, and the support of the public is much appreciated."
