PD: Muncie man injecting heroin causes two-vehicle crash

Posted

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A Muncie man told police he was injecting heroin when he ran into a U-haul trailer, causing a serious crash in Henry County over the weekend.

The crash happened just before 9 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 35 between Blountsville and Losantville.

Deputies with the Henry County Sheriff's Department said Chadwick Smith's vehicle crossed the center line and struck the trailer that was being pulled behind a West Virginia man's vehicle. He then struck a tree and a fiber optics box before coming to rest in someone's yard.

Smith told deputies he was on his way home to Muncie from Dayton, Ohio where he had gone to purchase heroin. He said he had been "shooting up" while driving and had nodded off before the crash. Police recovered a hypodermic syringe along with the drug in his vehicle after the crash.

Smith has been charged with possession of a narcotic drug, unlawful possession of a syringe, driving while intoxicated and public intoxication.
