LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Department is investigating after they say a man tried to abduct a 1-year-old by stuffing the child in a duffel bag.

Deputies were called to the Fish Lake area on the east side of the county just after 6 p.m. Thursday. The homeowner told police that a man approached him outside his home from a vehicle that was parked near the end of his driveway and asked for a glass of water.

The homeowner told police that he assumed the vehicle was broken and went inside to get the man some water. When he came back outside he saw the man trying to stuff his 1-year-old son into a duffle bag.

The homeowner told police he confronted the man, assaulting him to get his son back. He took his son inside the home and came back out to confront the man again and saw him fleeing in his vehicle.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 40's with brown, scruffy "surfer" type hair. He stood about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed around 200 pounds with a stocky "athletic" build. He was described as having tan and leathery skin, crow's feet around his eyes and was unshaven. He was wearing a white t-shirt and gray camouflage shorts. The vehicle is described as a silver or gray 1990's style minivan.

Anyone that may have witnessed the vehicle in the Fish Lake area or has knowledge of this incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 219.326.7700.
