INDIANPOLIS -- A 17-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with attempted murder in connection with a shooting on Saturday that left a man paralyzed from the waist down.

The teen, Rasean Collins, was waived into adult court in Marion County on multiple felony counts, including attempted murder, pointing a firearm and carrying a handgun without a license (a class "A" misdemeanor).

According to a probable cause affidavit filed Monday, Collins and the victim, Daniel Cook, were in a garage in the 5000 block of Milhouse Road when Cook threw an empty can of spray paint in an attempt to get the attention of someone in the home's kitchen.

Instead, the can apparently struck Collins, causing him to angrily confront Cook.

Witnesses told police the pair got into a verbal exchange outside of the garage, but no punches were thrown.

The argument continued to escalate, to the point where Cook attempted to move his two young children – a 2-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl – away from where it was taking place.

At that point, according to the affidavit, Collins pulled a revolver from his waistband and pointed it at Cook, saying "I'll shoot you bitch. I'm about it."

Cook reportedly told Collins "you're not going to pull the trigger" and grabbed for the gun, at which point Collins shot Cook in the chest at point-blank range.

Cook's children were standing nearby and witnessed the shooting, but were not injured.

Medics transported Cook to Eskenazi Hospital, where it was discovered the bullet had penetrated his chest cavity and lodged in his spine – paralyzing him from the waist down.

Collins was located by police a short time later with a revolver cylinder pin in his pocket. He was taken into custody at the Marion County Jail without incident.
