INDIANAPOLIS – One of two men shot in the middle of the street on the city's northeast side Wednesday morning has died.
One person was shot in the head and another person was shot in the stomach in the area of North Dearborn Street around 10:30 a.m.
John Jones, 28, and another man were taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.
Jones died from his injuries Wednesday evening. The second man has not been identified but remains in critical condition.
According to police, one of the men shot another man in the stomach and then a third man, who witnessed the shooting, shot the original shooter in the head. Police have not identified which of those men Jones was.
The witness stayed on scene and waited for police because he did not want the original shooter to fire again, investigators said.
Officers said a gun was found in the middle of the street and investigators were called to the scene to question neighbors.
Police believe someone was moving in or out of a home that caused a disturbance and led to the shootings. Home appliances and personal belongings were found scattered along the street.
The witness was taken into custody and investigators said they are not actively looking for a gunman, according to police dispatch.
Both shooting victims were transported to Eskenazi Hospital.
