MUNCIE — There is a huge need for foster homes because of the drug epidemic that has hit the U.S.
Foster care rates have gone up tremendously — but the amount of foster homes has not.
Jessica Smith, having fostered children herself, understands the need first hand.
"We were at a point in our lives where we felt like we needed more purpose and like God was directing us to do more," Smith said. "We didn't know where that was, but with my husband being a police officer and I being a nurse, we really felt called to fostering."
On top of having two kids of their own, Smith and her husband fostered three kids in one year.
"We found out really quickly that the state does not provide for daycare expenses. So on average we were in the negative just with daycare, about $500 a month," she said.
She knew that if her family was struggling, others had to be as well.
Smith was then prompted to start the 'Delaware County Foster Closet."
The closet provide local foster families with clothes for each season. Families can take up to 30 clothing items for each child, per season, with proof of fostering.
This is possible through donations kept at New Life Presbyterian Church in Yorktown. The closet helps about 120 local foster children each month.
