LAFAYETTE — A 1-month-old has died after police say the infant was attacked by a dog inside a home over the weekend.

Lafayette Police Department officers responded to the home in the 1900 block of Greenbush Street around 11:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of an infant that had been attacked by a dog.

The arriving officer found a dog, a pit-mixed breed, standing over an injured infant. In order to get to the infant, the officer fired one shot at the dog, killing it, police said.

The infant, Julian Connell, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Prior to attacking the infant, witnesses told police that the pit-mix had been fighting with a beagle-mix inside the home.

The beagle was taken to Purdue Veterinary Hospital for treatment of its injuries. It is unclear how badly the dog was injured.

The situation remains under investigation by the Lafayete Police Department.
