CARMEL, Ind. -- A heartwarming rescue was caught on video Tuesday as a McAlister's Deli employee worked to save 12 ducklings trapped in a storm drain.

The rescue happened near 146th Street in Hamilton County.

Twelve ducklings apparently pushed their way through the holes of a storm grate and got trapped inside. Their mother was above the grate "freaking out," according to witnesses.

"Mama duck was spinning around it and they were down there kind of tucked away," one witness said.

Ryan Penrod, a manager at the nearby McAlister's Deli, heeded the call to help. He went headfirst into the drain to pull the baby ducks out.

"She had those ducklings as close as I've ever seen a duck to a mom, or anyone to their momma," Penrod said.

Minutes later, the duck family headed back to a nearby pond.
