INDIANAPOLIS -- A 13-year-old boy died after being pulled out of a pool Sunday evening on the city's northwest side.

Officers someone was performing CPR on the boy when they arrived at Oakbrook Village Apartments in the 6000 block of Georgetown Road.

He was transported to St. Vincent Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the 13-year-old as Amadou Sow.

The cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning and it has been ruled an accident.

There were initially reports that Sow was trying to save another child when he went under: IMPD says that is not the case.

Instead, officers say the boy had been talking to his friends, and the three boys decided they wanted to "do something crazy."

Police say that's what led Sow to jump into the deep end of the pool.

There were no adults around, and no lifeguard was on duty.

The lack of lifeguard has prompted neighbors of the pool to remind their kids about using extra caution.

"Kids think that they're so resilient and they can just do anything," Mom and neighbor Monica Gueye, who has 5 kids, said. "I'm sure that boy thought the same thing."

The takeaway from the untimely drowning death is this: Talk to kids about the potential dangers of water and pools, and tell them to stay out of those bodies of water if there isn't an adult around.
