CLAY COUNTY, Ind. -- A 15-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a vehicle while running into the road to retrieve a ball Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the scene on State Road 246 just west of SR 159 in Clay County just after 12:30 p.m.
Investigators with the Clay County Sheriff's Department said the teen was visiting a home in the area when she ran into the road after a ball and into the path of a 2009 Nissan Quest van driven by a 39-year-old man from Jasonville. The teen was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital but later died from her injuries. The teen has been identified as Layla Raines of Jasonville, Indiana.
The accident remains under investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Department, and the information will be submitted to the Clay County Prosecutor's Office for a standard review. At this time no charges have been filed.
