MUNCIE, Ind. -- A Muncie man was arrested on murder charges Thursday morning in connection with the shooting death of his mother.

Delaware County Dispatch received a call around 4:28 a.m. Thursday stating a shooting had occurred at a home on the 3600 block of West Fleetwood Drive.

The male caller, later identified as Richard M. Franks, reportedly told dispatchers his girlfriend Amy Campbell had shot his mother in the back of the head, and that he believed his mother was dead.

Officers arrived to find 73-year-old Bonnie Franks lying deceased on the floor. A shotgun was also found a few feet away.

Neither Campbell not Richard Franks were at the home when officers arrived. Campbell was located a short time later on foot on the 2900 block of Hoyt Avenue. Richard Franks was found driving a 1993 Dodge Spirit on Chattam Lane. Both were taken into custody without incident.

Police later said Franks confessed to the murder and that Campbell would not be charged.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Franks said he got angry with Campbell and his mother.  After Campbell left the house, Franks and his mother continued to argue and she threatened to call his sister.

The probable cause goes on to say that Franks told investigators that he got a gun from his bedroom and loaded it. He said when his mother continued to threaten to call someone, he shot her.
