INDIANAPOLIS – Two men and a dog escaped their home Thursday morning after a fire broke out in their home’s garage on Indianapolis’ north east side, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

Kyle Looper,51, who lived at the home located at 8348 Tequista Circle, said he awoke to the smell of smoke shortly after 10:45 a.m. At the same time, a neighbor noticed the smoke and went to alert those inside.

Eric Ardaiolo, 25, who also lived at the home, heard the news from the neighbor and evacuated the home with Looper and their dog. None of them were hurt but a 2014 Hyundai Elantra was completely damaged.

Indianapolis firefighters said smoke alarms had not yet been activated in the home and they aren’t sure what started the fire. The case is being investigated.

Ten Indianapolis Fire Department units and three from the Lawrence Fire Department were dispatched. Indianapolis police were also on scene. The fire was controlled 20 minutes after firefighters arrived.

Firefighters said the estimated damage of the home is $200,000 and the homeowners do have insurance.
