INDIANAPOLIS — More than 9.4 million passengers flew out of Indianapolis International Airport in 2018.

That's a record.

"The writing was on the wall early on when we were seeing traffic escalating each quarter, and ultimately record-breaking volume across 11 months in 2018," said airport Executive Director Mario Rodriquez. "The passenger activity is the result of many contributing factors, but it's a collective testament that the growth in flights, destinations and seat capacity increase the value our airport delivers to the community."

Passenger volume was up more than 600,000 in 2018 over 2017.

There are a number of reasons for that, according to airport officials.

International flights were up 28 percent in 2018, there were more direct flights to the West Coast and Allegiant Air increased the number of flights out of Indianapolis.

2018 also marked the start of direct flights to Paris, along with Charleston (South Carolina), Oakland and Sarasota.
