BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY — A 5-year-old girl who was pulled unconscious from a pool Sunday afternoon is expected to recover thanks to a fast-acting family member who knew CPR.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office says emergency crews were called to the home in the 7000 block of W Paddock Lane around 4:30 p.m. for a possible drowning.

Witnesses told police that several children were swimming in the pool when one of them, the 5-year-old girl, was found unconscious.

A family member, who is a Registered Nurse, was able to pull the little girl from the pool and began CPR. The child had a slight pulse when emergency crews arrived and she was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital.

The child remains in the hospital but her condition is considered "stable" at this time. The sheriff's department says she should make a full recovery.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers says the near-drowning should serve as a reminder to parents and all adults that it only takes a few moments for a child's excitement to turn into tragedy when swimming.

“I cannot stress how important it is for adults to keep a very close watch on children who are swimming.” “This means being within hand’s reach, not talking on a phone, not checking Facebook, not chatting with friends, etc.”, said Myers.
