CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Animal care and control officers in Montgomery County rescued 56 dogs from a Crawfordsville home that they said wasn't even fit for a human to live in.

Officers said the animals were living in the own waste, had bits and pieces of dog and human food scattered throughout the house and that the dogs were in bad health.

The Animal Welfare League in Montgomery County said the dogs need a normal diet of dog food, to be cleaned up and checked out.

Officers removed 53 Chihuahuas, two black lab puppies and a Shepard.

Animal care and control said the homeowner gave up ownership of the pets and is cooperating with authorities, but right now isn't facing any criminal charges.

The dogs will be up for adoption once they are given the medical attention they need. Visit their website soon to find out more info if you're interested in adopting.
