9-year-old boy killed in Muncie fire was home alone

MUNCIE —A 9-year-old boy who died in a fire in Muncie early Thursday morning was home alone.

Firefighters with the Muncie Fire Department responded to the scene on South Walnut Street just before 4 a.m. When they arrived, flames were showing through the windows of the two-story home.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock out the fire. During a search of the home, the Delaware County coroner says Vincent Gibbons was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors told firefighters that a family of three, including a child, lived inside the home. No other injuries were reported.

Fire officials say the child was home alone when the fire started.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Muncie Fire Department.
