CARMEL — A major intersection under construction in Carmel will soon see a shift in traffic patterns.

According to a release from the city, traffic changes at 96th Street and Keystone Parkway will begin June 17. Due to utility delays, the previous plan to close east-west traffic on 96th Street will be extended from 60 to 150 days.

The traffic light at 96th and Keystone will be removed on or about June 17, and traffic on Keystone will shift onto newly constructed off-ramps.

Traffic coming onto Keystone, north of I-465, will continue through the construction project without stopping. One lane will allow drivers to turn right onto 96th Street, and the other lane will lead into Carmel.

Cars driving south on Keystone will not be able to turn left onto 96th Street, and drivers should take detours on either 106th or 86th Street.

The release said the project should be completed by the end of 2019 with these traffic changes in place. The previous plan was for utility lines to be removed by the end of May, but utility companies notified the city that work on removing the lines would need to be extended to the end of July.

Construction on the new interchange that will elevate Keystone Parkway over 96th Street with roundabout controlled ramps began last June.
