INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis police say approximately 200 rounds were fired at a suspect who shot at them three different times during a traffic stop and pursuit Monday night.

During a briefing Tuesday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Major Richard Riddle revealed more specific details about the officer-involved shooting that left one officer with gunshot wounds and the suspect dead.

Riddle said the suspect's vehicle was initially stopped at a gas station near the intersection of 71st Street and Georgetown Road because it matched the description of one used in an armed robbery on July 21.

Riddle said officers ordered the suspect and his passenger out of the car.

When they refused, police deployed several rounds from a pepper ball gun into the suspect's vehicle.

Riddle said the primary purpose was to get the suspect to comply, and no gunshots were fired at this point in the pursuit.

The passenger got out of the car and the suspect sped out of the gas station and onto Georgetown Road.

Riddle listed the following events from the chase in chronological order:

  • The suspect made a u-turn and headed north on Georgetown
  • He opened fire when he was parallel with a southbound IMPD vehicle, hitting an officer in the ankle
  • A female officer had an injury to her arm, likely from flying glass. She was treated at the scene
  • The pursuit lasted about 25 minutes on I-465 and through city streets
  • Suspect fired several times at officers; officers did not return fire
  • Stop sticks were deployed several times
  • Officers first fired shots at Newton Avenue and S. Rural Street when the suspect finally got out of his car and shot at an occupied IMPD vehicle. The officer inside was not injured. Gunfire was exchanged for two to three minutes.
  • The suspect fired at officers a third time when they approached his vehicle.
  • Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The officer injured by gunfire was treated and released from the hospital shortly after midnight on Tuesday

Police identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jeffrey Tyson. They believe he lived in Indianapolis, but was previously from Missouri.

At least one handgun was recovered from his vehicle.

During the shootout, 16 IMPD officers discharged their weapons and fired approximately 200 rounds.

Seventeen officers will be off work per police procedure, which includes the 16 who discharged their weapons and the injured officer.

Their names are not being released due to heightened concerns over officer safety because of the recent deadly police shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge.
