BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. --  A Bartholomew County man died from an overdose of loperamide, the active ingredient in the anti-diarrheal medication Imodium, according to the Bartholomew County Coroner.

Dale Pattingill, 40, was found dead in his home in the 5600 block of East County Road 700 North on Jan. 21.

The coroner says toxicology tests showed that Pattingill had an extremely high amount of loperamide which can cause a fatal irregular heartbeat in large doses.

The cause of death was ruled accidental.

Loperamide is sometimes taken in large doses by people suffering withdrawal symptoms like constipation from opioids like heroin.

in January, the FDA announced it is working the manufacturers of over-the-counter loperamide to use blister packs or limit the number of doses per package.

The FDA says it continues to have reports of serious heart problems and deaths with much higher than the recommended doses of loperamide, primarily among people who are intentionally misusing or abusing the product.
