HOPE, Ind. -- Students at a Bartholomew County school organized a prayer vigil on Friday in response to accusations that their district isn’t properly separating church and state because they allow prayer during school events.
“I don’t think the school administration did anything wrong,” said senior Grace Hasler. “I think there were some things that were misconstrued and situations that they thought happened that were misrepresented.”
The “Freedom From Religion Foundation” sent a letter to Flatrock-Hawcreek Schools asking them to stop including prayer during school-sponsored events. The group claims to have received a complaint from a parent in the school system.
The school responded to the group through their attorney, Scott Andrews, saying: “While we disagree with much of the factual allegations raised in your letters, please be assured that the school takes the allegations seriously and such matters have been discussed accordingly.”
RTV6 reached out to the organization that sent the letter. Their attorney said the group is trusting that the school is correcting the issue but will seek legal action if they do not.
