Funeral arrangements, procession route set for Columbus soldier killed in Afghanistan

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- The funeral arrangements and profession route have been set for a Columbus soldier who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month.

Jonathon Michael Hunter, 23, was one of two American service members killed when a suicide bomber targeted their convoy.

Sgt. Hunter’s body will be returned to Columbus on Tuesday, August 22.

A procession will leave from the airport around 11 a.m. transfer his body to Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.

The public is encouraged to line the procession route to show their support for Hunter’s family and his service.

Procession route for Sgt. Hunter: 

  • The procession will leave the airport at approximately 11:00 a.m. and travel south on Ray Boll Boulevard.  
  • The procession will turn west on Arnold Street and then go south on Central Avenue.  
  • The procession will turn west on 25th Street and then turn south on Washington Street where it will conclude at the Barkes, Weaver, & Glick Funeral Home located at 1029 Washington Street.

A funeral service honoring Sgt. Hunter’s life will be held at Columbus East High School on Saturday, August 26, at 2 p.m.

Full Military Honors will be presented by the Indiana Army National Guard Honor guard.

A private burial will be held at a later date.

Jonathon graduated from Columbus East High School in 2011 where he was a member of the football team.

The U.S. military said two service members were killed and four others were wounded in the attack. The Taliban has taken responsibility for the bombing.
