COLUMBUS, Ind. – A woman 34-weeks pregnant finds herself stranded in Indiana as she was not able to return to her home in Saint Thomas due to the destructive path Hurricane Irma left on the island.
Tara Bouis and her husband Sasha said their initial plan to briefly visit family in Columbus, Indiana turned into an indefinite stay as the storm ripped through their home.
“In the past 24 hours, finding out that our home is destroyed and we've probably lost two businesses,” said Tara. “We had friends sheltering in our home while we were away.”
The couple said the roof of their condo beat the storm, but their home was filled with water. They said a satellite phone has been their only form of communication.
Not only has the couple tried to digest the amount of damage, they were forced to change birth plans for their baby. Tara said she recently found a doctor that would care for her in Columbus.
“It's really hard to be here and see the destruction and not be able to help,” said Sasha.
Roads in Saint Thomas are impassable and emergency systems are down.
The Bouis family said they are also concerned about Irma’s next possible victim – Florida, which houses Saint Thomas’ only port that ships food and medical supplies to the island.
