BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington family is upset because they say they weren't told that vegetation along the railroad tracks in their backyard was going to be cleared.
The Chance family says the wall of vines and trees gave them a sense of security and privacy.
A spokesman for the Indiana Railroad Company says they cleared the greenery over safety concerns and to prevent transients from taking up residence in the dense tree line.
Ironically, the Chance's say they feel less safe now because they think their property is more vulnerable to thieves and people walking the tracks.
"I don't think there will ever be a sense of privacy. It's gonna take a long time for that stuff to grow," said Kay Chance.
The railroad company says no more vegetation will be removed.
"My husband asked them if they were going to clean any of this up and they said there were no plans on clearing any of this away or doing any landscaping," said Chance.
The railroad company says it didn't have to inform the family because it's their land but they will consider notifying people who live along the tracks before future clearing projects take place.
