BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Bloomington Police officers found a 20-year-old man dead from an apparent suicide by hanging and a 21-year-old woman dead from apparent stab wounds Wednesday night.

Police responded to the Stratum Apartments, a student apartment complex located at 3130 Goodnight Way, for a call of a man and woman being found in the common area of one of the apartment buildings around 9:21 p.m.

According to a press release from the Bloomington Police Department, detectives believe the female victim was killed by the man who then took his own life.

The woman has been identified as Yaolin Wang, 21, and lived in the apartment building. The man has been identified as Chuanlin Xiao, 20, and lived in Washington State.

Wang and Xiao had been in a relationship for approximately six months and they had lived together at the apartment on Goodnight Way for approximately a month, according to a press release from the Bloomington Police Department.

Wang was a junior transfer student who was in her first semester at Indiana University. Xiao was not a student, according to Mark Land, IU spokesman.

"Any time you lose a student for any reason its obviously a sad day. Our thoughts go out to her friends and family members," Land said.
