WHITE COUNTY — The body of a man who went missing in the Tippecanoe River while kayaking on Memorial Day has been found.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources officials say Stephen Pitts, 48, was kayaking with a friend just below the dam when he capsized because of the force of the water.

Pitts was not wearing a life jacket when he was thrown from his kayak and went underwater.

Pitts' friend was able to make it to shore and called for help. Rescue crews spent Monday evening searching for Pitts and returned several days this week to try to find his body.

Around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, the Monticello Fire Department located a body south of the Norway Dam.

The official cause of death is pending, but is believed to be accident drowning, according to DNR.
