LEBANON, Ind. -- A Boone County sheriff's deputy was fatally wounded while assisting Lebanon police with a pursuit Friday morning.
Lebanon Police Department officers were searching for Hillary Williams, who had an active arrest warrant for residential entry, at an apartment complex on Yates Street. They did not locate her but they did find John D. Baldwin Jr., 28, who also had an active arrest warrant for violation of probation for possession of a syringe.
When Baldwin Jr. was ordered to stop, he and two other people got into a silver Ford Focus and fled the scene.
Officers began to chase the Focus through the streets of Lebanon and were joined in their pursuit by Boone County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Pickett. Dep. Pickett had been at a school when he responded to the chase underway.
The Focus came to a stop around 9:30 a.m. on Indian Springs Road and people in the car took off on foot. Dep. Pickett was shot during that chase. Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen was extremely emotional as he spoke about Dep. Pickett

The Boone County deputy was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. At a press conference Friday afternoon, Sheriff Nielsen said that Dep. Pickett, 34, will not survive his injuries. His organs are being donated.

The accused shooter, identified as Anthony Baumgardt, 21, was wounded and is stable.

Two other suspects, John D. Baldwin Sr., 55, and John D. Baldwin Jr., 28, both fled after the shooting. Baldwin Jr. got back into the Ford Focus and was arrested a short time later after a wrong-way pursuit on I-65.

Lebanon Community Schools were placed on lockdown after the incident as a precaution and people living in the area were asked to lock their windows and doors. Police say there was no danger to any children at school during the incident.
The shootings remain under investigation by Indiana State Police. They are still talking to witnesses and that will go on for several days.
