NEW PALESTINE—A 14-year-old boy is being treated for serious injuries at Riley Hospital for Children after he was struck by a pickup truck, Monday morning.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff's Department, Kian Heise was on his way to school when he was hit by a Ford F-250 at School Street and U.S. 52 in the heart of New Palestine.

Heise was on his bike and heading into the New Palestine school complex when the accident happened at about 7:15 a.m.

A New Palestine man was at the wheel of the truck. A public information officer for the sheriff's department said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Witnesses said the truck did not appear to be speeding. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, according to investigators.

Heise suffered head trauma and internal injuries. He's in critical condition at Riley but is expected to survive.
