INDIANAPOLIS — Next year's Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be held over the Fourth of July weekend on Sunday, July 5.

NASCAR made the announcement Tuesday as it unveiled its 2020 schedule.

Since the first 400 at IMS in 1994, the race was held in late-July or early-August.

Last year, it moved to the second Sunday of September, competing with the National Football League's opening day.

This year, the race is scheduled for September 8.

"There's no better venue to throw a massive party for our nation's birthday than the Racing Capital of the World," IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. "Fourth of July weekend is a celebration of patriotism and getting outside in the summer with family and friends, and a Big Machine concert and NASCAR racing at the Speedway combine those two traditions, making for a special Independence Weekend celebration."

IMS has seen declining attendance for the Brickyard 400 in recent years and Boles hopes the new date over a holiday weekend will change that.
