BROWN COUNTY, Ind. -- The logging at Yellowwood State Forest, which has drawn protests and strong opposition over the last year, is now complete.
Nearly 1,700 trees were harvested during the project, which the Department of Natural Resources says has freed up resources like sunlight to areas of the forest it wasn’t able to reach before.
The DNR says it’s a move for the long-term health of the forest.
Governor Holcomb praised the work of the DNR on Wednesday during an exclusive tour of the 299-acre area.

"I'm proud of the Department of Natural Resources and their stewardship making sure that everything is data-driven, that we're looking at science, that we're doing all we can to make sure that the forest is healthy and the habitat is healthy and diverse."
The Indiana Forest Alliance remains opposed to the logging saying it automatically changes the character of the forest.

The group’s spokeswoman issued a statement to RTV6 Wednesday saying:
"Some or all of the rest of the Yellowwood backcountry can still be set aside from logging: we're not giving up that the Governor will work with the DNR to strike a balance between logging and wilderness recreation."
